FROSTBITE
This is when part of your skin or body is frozen. Usually the nose, cheeks,
ears, fingers and toes are involved in minor cases of frostbite.
Prevention
- Avoid exposing any parts of the body to the cold
- avoid alcohol
- take frequent breaks
- wear a hat and layers of clothing
- be careful with liquids at cold temperatures as not everything gets solid
at the same temperature as water
Signs and Symptoms
- lack of feeling in the affected area
- skin appears waxy
- skin is very cold to the touch
- skin is discoloured (flushed, white, yellow or blue)
Treatment
minor frostbite:
- warm the area gently with your hands or armpit
- Do not rub the area especially NOT WITH SNOW as the skin will be damaged.
- Do not apply heating pads.
- get adult or medical aid
Major frostbite
- : get to medical aid as quickly as possible.
