DEHYDRATION
The human body is more than 70 percent water and since it uses and loses water
at a great rate you need to replenish that supply to prevent dehydration. Being
dehydrated can agrevate other conditions or cause new problems.
Prevention
- drink water regularly. Average consumption should be 4-6 litres per day
(even when winter camping) and up to 9 litres during hot high activity days
- drink water before you are thirsty
- carry 1-2 litres (and more if supply is unknown) of water on hikes or trips
Signs and Symptoms
- thirst
- sticky feeling inside the mouth
- reduced urine output
- dark colored urine
- poor judgement
- slower muscle response
- depression
Treatment
- Ensure an adequate supply of clean drinking water (treated by boiling, chemicals,
filters and purifiers) is available
