The Beaver program is based
on the story "Friends of the Forest" and is
designed for girls and boys typically aged 5 to 7. It
emphasizes having fun while encouraging children to
feel good about themselves, their friends and family,
God, and nature. Beavers helps children learn basic
social skills and gain self confidence. The Beaver program
promotes activities that encourage children to:
find examples of their own spiritual beliefs
experience and express love and joy
be healthy and have good feelings about
themselves
develop a sense of belonging and sharing
in small group activities
develop a sense of cooperation through
non-competitive activities
Fun and friendship are the cornerstones
of the Beaver program. Through an adventurous program
of outdoor activities, creative play, music, and cooperative
games, Beavers enjoy time with their friends (and meet
new ones), learn how to get along within a group, and
develop the confidence to be themselves.
2009 marked the 35th birthday of Beavers in Canada.
Like all Scouting members, Beavers enjoy many outdoor
adventures with their friends in the colony. Nature
walks, short hikes, tree plantings and family sleepovers
give Beavers a taste of outdoor fun. Through these activities,
Beavers develop an appreciation and a sense of caring
for the environment.
Beavers are a vital part of the community, country and
world in which they live. Visits to parks, power plants,
fire and police stations thrill young Beavers and illustrate
the many important facets of their community.
Where Beavers live
Beavers have a special place where they meet each week.
It is a mystical place called the "Pond,"
where you live in a "Colony," and join a small
group called a "Lodge," with other Beavers
just like you! There is one leader for every five Beavers.
Beaver Tails and Symbols
When you join the "Lodge," you get your very
own symbol, to attach to the pocket of your vest. Every
fall you get to make a new tail to wear on your hat.
The tail changes colours as you get older. Just before
you swim up to Cubs, you wear the "White Tail"
with the "Magic Light" symbol.
Eager Beavers
When you learn your Law and Promise, you can become
an Eager Beaver, during a special ceremony with all
your leaders and friends.

Promise:
I promise to love God and help take care of the
world.
Beaver Law:
A Beaver has fun, works hard and helps family

Beaver Salute
A Beaver salute is a special sign of greeting. To make
it, just bend your two front fingers, to look like the
two front teeth of a real beaver.
Tail Slap
A "tail slap" opens every meeting. Your leader
will help you start each meeting this way.
River Banks
This is one way to join with your friends - you stand
side-by-side in two wavy lines, just as if you were
standing along a river bank.
| And
here's a Beaver song called Slapping Tails
(to the tune of "Jingle Bells")
Slapping tails, slapping tails
Beavers all are we,
Oh what fun we have each day
In our Beaver colony! (repeat once)
Working in our lodge
Sharing with our friends
Having fun and making crafts,
Till the meeting ends;
Then we leave for home
With the things we brought,
Carefully crossing at each street,
Till safely home we've got. It's great to be a
Beaver! |
